Sennebogen Waste Handlers Aid Record Levels of Waste Wood Processing

Wood may literally grow on trees, but that doesn’t mean that it is any less precious a resource for our planet. Reuse and recycling of wood waste is a crucial piece in the environmental jigsaw and it plays a key role in the circular economy that is needed to combat climate change.

The good news is that according to figures released recently by the Wood Recyclers Association, almost 98% of the UK’s waste wood was sent for processing in 2023 – the highest level on record. This processing ensures that the maximum possible use and value is gained from the wood that we use and discard, reducing the amount of new wood required.

Approximately 4.5million tonnes of wood waste was created in the UK last year, with 4.312million tonnes sent for processing, representing an impressive 97.9%. Just under two thirds of this (63%) was sent for biomass burning, cutting our dependence on carbon-intense fuels such as oil and gas. Not only does this have positive environmental benefits, it also increases the UK’s energy security, making us less susceptible to the large price swings seen after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Roughly a quarter of the UK’s waste wood (22%) was used in the production of panel board for the housing market, while a further 8% was used for animal bedding, equine surfaces and other reuse purposes which would otherwise have required products made from new wood.

“We are delighted to report another record year for waste wood processing,” said Julia Turner, Executive Director of the Wood Recyclers Association. “It shows that supply and demand is now well balanced, and we have well developed markets for all waste wood…providing the best environmental outcome for this valuable resource.”
