Molson has announced a 3-year partnership with Treedom, the organisation dedicated to planting trees and “greening the planet”. Since its foundation in 2010, more than 3 million trees have been grown in Africa, South America, Asia and Europe. All are planted directly by local farmers, bringing environmental, social and financial benefits to their communities.

Molson’s commitment over three years supports the planting of 2000 trees, with the first 150 being gifted to staff attending the company’s annual “Gathering of the Clans” conference, held at Ashton Gate in October. This includes leadership staff from all Molson Group companies and business areas, including Scotland and the recently acquired US business, Powerscreen of California.

Treedom’s innovative platform is the first in the world that allows businesses and individuals to plant trees from a distance and follow the story of the project online. Every single tree is photographed, geo-located, digitalised so it is visible online, meaning that when Molson gifts a tree to an employee, they are able to watch the progress of the project online.

Annalea Ormiston, Head of HR for Molson Group, set up the partnership and believes the benefits go far beyond the environmental outcomes. “This is primarily an environmental initiative, in that the trees we plant will absorb carbon – in Molson’s case, we have chosen to plant a variety of trees, to offer maximum carbon absorption. This forms part of our commitment as a company to achieving a carbon net zero position.

“But beyond this, there are many benefits to consider. Firstly, the benefits to the communities in which Treedom operates, which are significant. But it is also good for our own people at Molson, as it is something they can really feel good about. Our team are environmentally and socially conscious and being part of this project in such a significant way makes them proud of the company they work for. It’s also part of our overall mission to create a company that demonstrates its community, social and environmental commitments, which in turn enables us to attract the best talent to work for us and set us apart from competitors. It’s a win, win.”

Treedom was chosen because it exclusively plants trees within sustainable agroforestry systems – combining the principles of agriculture and forestry – returning the land to its natural level of cover, production, and biodiversity. The planting of forest tree species benefits the local ecosystem, the soil and other crops, and the planting of fruit tree species will, in time, provide food and income opportunities for the farmers who take care of them and their families.

Treedom’s Head of Development, Anna Weston said “we are incredibly excited to commence a longterm partnership with Molson this year.  Sustained commitments like this from responsible companies like Molson help us in our mission to green the planet at the scale and speed we need.  We are delighted to engage their staff from all Molson Group companies.”
