Staff from across Molson Group took part in the “Waste World Cup” charity football event, organised by letsrecycle.com, to raise money and awareness for WasteAid UK and our ongoing #ukraineaidappeal

The event consisted of a mixed gender 6 a-side football tournament where teams had the chance to show off their footballing skills and compete for the prestigious silverware. The Waste World Cup is the UK waste industry’s premier sporting event, so our team took the opportunity to help raise awareness of the importance of recycling at the same time as raising money for charity.

Under the guidance of team manager Dan Bailey, Midlands Sales Manager, the Molson team breezed through the groups stage with two wins and a draw. Molson Green Sales Manager, Nathan “The Wall” Baird, did a great job between the sticks and there were some incredible goals by Andrew Wilkinson, Luke Mercer and Ellie Dorey.

With confidence high, the team went straight into the quarter final game. But after quickly going down 2-0 in the first half, the team faced a steep challenge to keep their hopes of silverware alive. Despite a heroic performance, with the team pulling the game back to 2-2 draw, hopes of glory were dashed by a late goal.

The real winners, though, were the charities for whom the event raised significant much-needed funds. Over £5000 raised for WasteAid UK – an independent UK charity (non-profit), set up by waste management professionals to share practical and low-cost waste management know-how with communities in low-income countries. The Molson team members also made voluntary contributions to our ongoing Ukraine appeal, adding a further £200 to the fund. Every penny directly reaches the people that need it most, either directly as cash via credible charities in the region, or by funding transport for aid and facilitating local community groups in the UK to maximise their efforts.
