Simple tools can save lives. We firmly believe in protecting our employees at Molson and have just completed the installation of a defibrillator in every one of our service depots across the UK.

There are around 30,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (when the heart stops pumping blood around the body) every year in the UK and fewer than one in ten people survive them. Startling figures. However, the chances of survival are considerably improved (doubled, or more) with the provision of immediate CPR and defibrillation, so easy access to a defibrillator can be an absolute life saver.

That’s why we’ve made sure there’s a public access defibrillator in all 13 of our depots and are currently registering the location of each device with the British Heart Foundation’s The Circuit, too, creating a database that’s accessible by the ambulance service; thereby ensuring the benefits of defibrillators are maximised and even more lives potentially saved.

Our Molson depots are typically located in busy industrial locations, and sometimes centrally within local residential communities. James Smith, SHEQ Manager at Molson Group, says “We take our responsibilities as local employers seriously; and initiatives like this demonstrate our commitment to supporting the welfare of all those around us, and go above and beyond delivering regulatory health & safety policies and practices.”

The defibrillators have clear, audible instructions so that any employee is confident and able to use the defibrillators properly if ever needed. This is a hugely important component of the strategy – the concept of giving someone an electric shock may appear quite daunting but it’s the best and most efficient way to get a heart started again if it has stopped – and the quicker, the better; so this ensures that we are all fully prepared to spring into action.
