Aggregate washing applications
Aggregate washing is essential to ensure raw materials meet strict quality standards for construction and landscaping. Concrete Production
To produce a stand concrete product free from defects, it is essential to ensure that the aggregates that go into the mix are free from contamination and of a consistent size and shape. Excess fines, like clay or dust, can interfere with the cement’s bonding to the aggregates, weakening the concrete. Washing removes these particles, improving workability, mix consistency, and strength, while also reducing the risk of cracks or long-term deterioration. All concrete is made from a base of cement, aggregate and water. For high-strength concrete mix, the addition of sand into the mix is key, along with a higher quality aggregate.
Water Filtration
When aggregates are used to help the natural filtration of water, it’s crucial to use clean aggregates that don’t introduce additional impurities into the water. The process of washing the aggregates removes fine particles that could clog the filtration system or negatively impact water quality. Clean sand and gravel improve the filtration process, providing a more effective medium for trapping suspended solids, bacteria, and other harmful particles, leading to cleaner, safer water for consumption or other uses.
Railway Ballast Production
Washed aggregates are commonly used in the construction of railway lines. The aggregate is used as a base on which the railway sleepers and tracks are then built. The role of the washed aggregates in this helps maintain track stability and promote effective drainage. Dirty aggregates can clog drainage systems and cause erosion. Washing ensures the gravel is free of fines and dust, allowing water to flow properly and preventing track displacement, which could lead to maintenance issues or even track failure.
