Thwaites Enhances Site Dumper Security With CESAR

Security is a major issue in the UK construction industry. Statistics from NFU Mutual show that as many as 89% of contractors have been affected by thefts from sites, with reported levels of theft rising by as much as 14% year on year.

Equipment and plant theft are thought to cost the sector as much as £800million every year, according to insurers Allianz Cornhill. This is in addition to the loss of time and productivity that contractors experience while waiting for equipment to be recovered or, more often than not, replaced.

While the rate of thefts is ever increasing, unfortunately the recovery rate for unregistered plant and equipment remains resolutely low. Only around 10% of unregistered machines ever find their way back to the site they were stolen from. However, if the equipment has been security tagged and registered, using a scheme such as CESAR, this recovery rate increases dramatically.

What is the CESAR scheme?

CESAR stands for the Construction Equipment Security and Registration scheme, which was introduced by the Construction Equipment Association in 2007. The aim of the scheme is twofold; to try to deter criminal activity on construction sites, and to increase the chances of equipment being recovered and returned to their rightful owners when thefts do take place.

The scheme is the only one of its kind that is supported by the Home Office and the Metropolitan Police. All equipment covered by the CESAR scheme is digitally tagged and registered with scheme operators, Datatag Ltd who use the very latest monitoring and multi-layered identification technology to provide 24/7 monitoring of equipment and rapid response to thefts. This makes it much easier for the police to identify stolen equipment and return it to the original construction sites. Tagging equipment, using the CESAR scheme, has been shown to increase the recovery rate by as much as six times.

Thwaites joins CESAR

Molson are delighted to announce that their leading site dumper supplier, Thwaites, have joined forces with CESAR to provide the highest levels of security on their market leading site dumper range.

Molson has been steadily increasing its representation of the Thwaites brand in 2024. Molson Young Plant Sales was appointed the Thwaites main dealer for the Scottish Borders earlier this year, unifying our representation of the brand in Scotland, while Molson Equipment was appointed as Thwaites main dealers in the North East of England. In addition, Molson Equipment added the new Thwaites territory of Cumbria in June.

Molson Group Commercial Director Henry Moore welcomed Thwaites’ decision to join the CESAR scheme:

“Equipment theft is a real problem for our industry, which involves millions of pounds in additional and unnecessary costs every year. This is particularly difficult at a time when margins are historically tight,” he said. “Thwaites commitment to the CESAR scheme for their site dumpers means Molson are able to supply the highest quality equipment, backed by complete security and peace of mind.”

Higher security means lower costs

The enhanced security of the CESAR scheme not only delivers invaluable confidence and peace of mind, it can also deliver tangible cash savings too, as Andy Sabin, Thwaites General Sales Manager explains:

“Registering equipment through the CESAR scheme reduces the total cost of site dumper ownership by lowering insurance premiums and further protecting our market leading residuals,” he says.
